QUALIFYING STRUCTURE

The maximum number of skaters who can compete at Nationals is 18 men, 18 women, 12 pairs, and 15 dance teams at each level.

Skaters can be granted immediate qualification to Nationals by medaling at the senior level in the previous season, or be exempted from qualifying competitions due to an international assignment taking place around the same time.

2018-19 Russian National Qualifying Competitions

SYWTW FS

Over the course of fall, Russian skaters will compete on the Russian Cup Series to qualify to the National Championships in December 2018. This post will explain the Russian Skating Union qualifying structure and provide a list of links and information that will be updated throughout the season.

Reference: Russian Figure Skating Federation

See also: 2018-19 National Figure Skating Competitions

QUALIFYING STRUCTURE

Russia holds three separate National Championships at the senior, junior, and novice levels. Junior and senior skaters qualify for the Russian National Championships by competing at two of five events in the Russian Cup Series. As in the ISU Grand Prix series, points are allotted to final placements at each competition. Qualifiers are determined by the total number of points earned from two competitions up until the maximum number of competitors per each discipline is filled. In the case of a tie, the tie is broken by combined total scores over the two competitions.

Skaters are granted immediate qualification to Senior Nationals if they have an assignment on the ISU Grand Prix or qualify to the ISU Junior Grand Prix Final. Skaters are immediately qualified for Junior Nationals if they have a ISU Junior Grand Prix assignment. Skaters who have already qualified for Nationals can still compete at Russian Cup events if they want to, but their placement will not affect their advancement to Nationals.

The maximum number of skaters who can compete at the Senior and Junior National Championships is 18 men, 18 women, 12 pairs, and 15 dance teams. Skaters must be at least 14 years old to compete at the Senior National Championships.

Novice skaters compete in their own national championships in two age groups, junior novice (born 2008 or later) and senior novice (born in 2006-2007).  Novice skaters qualify via regional (“zonal”) competitions or city championships depending on their location, with various quotas of skaters advancing from each. Novice Russian competitions are composed of 3 segments instead of 2: elements, short program and free skate. The elements portion of the competition requires one solo jump, one jump in combination, a combination spin and a step sequence. Each skater is allowed 2 attempts at the jumping passes.

Russian Cup events are livestreamed by the Russian Figure Skating Federation on Youtube. Keep an eye on our blog for information on watching the National Championships.

QUALIFYING STRUCTURE

Skaters qualify for the US National Championships by competing at one of nine regional championships and one of three sectional championships (Eastern, Midwestern, and Pacific Coast). Singles skaters must enter the regional championships in the area where their home club is located. Pair and ice dance teams do not compete at regionals, only sectionals. Teams in which partners represent different clubs may choose to compete in the section of either one of their home clubs.

The top 4 finishers in each discipline at regionals advance to sectionals, and the top 4 finishers in each discipline at sectionals advance to nationals. If a regional/sectional event has 4 or fewer competitors entered in a discipline, all of the skaters automatically advance to the next competition. If there are 12 or fewer skaters entered in a discipline at all regional championships within a section, all of the skaters automatically advance to the sectional championships.

US Nationals and qualifying events have five levels of competition: juvenile, intermediate, novice, junior, and senior. Regional championships include events at all 5 levels for singles skaters. Sectional championships include events at all 5 levels for pairs and ice dance as well as singles. The US National Championships is a week-long competition, holding events for each discipline at each level.

Skaters can also advance directly to Nationals without competing at qualifying events in the following ways:

  • Placing top 5 in a senior event at the previous US National Championships

  • Winning a medal at the most recent Winter Olympics

  • Winning a medal at the previous World Championships

  • Qualifying for the current season’s Grand Prix Final or Junior Grand Prix Final

  • Earning a bye due to an international assignment taking place at the same time as the sectional championships (skaters can also be exempted from regionals due to having an international assignment)

Skaters who have directly qualified for Nationals can still compete at regionals/sectionals if they want to, but they will not count towards the advancement quota.

US National Championships

2018-19 Japanese National Qualifying Competitions + Other Domestic Events

SYWTW FS

For countries with a large number of skaters such as Japan, Russia, Canada and the USA, skaters usually qualify for their country’s national championships through a series of smaller regional competitions. Japanese qualifying competitions will take place from September to November. This post will explain the JSF’s qualifying structure and provide a list of other notable domestic competitions. Links to information and results will be updated throughout the season.

QUALIFYING STRUCTURE

Skaters qualify for the Japanese National Championships by competing at one of six regional (or “block”) championships and one of two sectional championships (Eastern and Western). Top finishers at regionals advance to sectionals, and top finishers at sectionals advance to nationals. The number of qualifying skaters in each discipline and competition is determined annually by the JSF.

Japan holds three separate national championships for three different levels: novice, junior, and senior. Levels are separated by age. There are two categories of novice, Novice A (older) and Novice B (younger). To qualify for Novice Nationals, skaters compete in the novice category at regional championships. Novice skaters perform only free skates and do not compete at sectionals. To qualify for Junior Nationals, skaters compete in the junior category at regionals and sectionals, and to qualify for Senior Nationals, skaters compete in the senior category at regionals and sectionals. Top finishers at Novice Nationals are invited to participate in Junior Nationals, and top finishers at Junior Nationals are invited to compete at Senior Nationals. Pair and ice dance teams do not compete at regionals, only sectionals.

Seeded skaters are chosen by the JSF to advance directly to Nationals without competing at qualifying competitions. Generally, medalists at the previous National Championships are seeded. Seeded skaters can still compete at regionals/sectionals if they want to, but they will not count towards the quota of skaters who advance. Skaters who would normally need to compete at regionals/sectionals may be exempt from doing so if they have an international competition during or within one week of their qualifying event.

Seeded skaters for the 2018 Japanese National Championships:

  • Junior: Nana Araki, Mitsuki Sumoto, Sena Miyake, Tatsuya Tsuboi

  • Senior: Satoko Miyahara, Kaori Sakamoto, Rika Kihira, Shoma Uno, Keiji Tanaka, Yuzuru Hanyu
