Many skaters use Challenger competitions as warm-ups before their Grand Prix events. Scores recorded at Challenger competitions count for a skater’s season’s/personal best.

The Ice 2015

SYWTW FS

Normally I don’t make separate posts for shows, but The Ice has an exceptionally long tour this year and there’s so much information to organize, so I figured it merited its own post this time.

WHAT’S THE ICE?

For the newbies, The Ice is Mao Asada’s skating show, held annually during the off season since 2007. It features skaters from around the world and is known for its interesting group programs and various on-ice and off-ice shenanigans. One of the highlights of the show in recent years is the dance battle, hosted by Jeffrey Buttle, which is exactly what it sounds like.

Chukyo TV’s official Youtube channel for The Ice uploads videos of the show every year (usually from the Aichi stop of the tour). Unfortunately, they make the previous year’s videos private once they upload new ones, which is why that channel looks so empty right now. The Youtube channel seems to have been deleted; it’s possible that they won’t be uploading videos anymore.

To get a feel for what The Ice is like, I recommend watching the ShibSibs’ music videos and vlogs from the last few years: 2012, 2013, 2014.

2015 TOUR DATES AND CAST

BROADCAST SCHEDULE

All times are in Japan Standard Time. I’ll edit this if/when I find out more info.

  • 7/25: 09:55-10:55, Fuji TV - Sapporo show, short broadcast with fluffs (Part 1, Part 2)

  • 8/2: 12:55, UHB Hokkaido - Sapporo show

  • 8/2: 15:00-16:25, Chukyo TV - Aichi show, short broadcast with fluffs (Videos)

  • 8/8: 15:30-16:55, Miyagi TV - Sendai show

  • 8/16: 02:00-04:00, Chukyo TV - Aichi show, long broadcast

  • 8/16: 16:00-17:25, BS Nittele

  • 8/30: 21:30-23:30, Nittele Plus - Aichi show, full broadcast

  • 9/13: 17:50-20:20, Nittele Plus - Aichi show, full broadcast

  • 10/3: 20:30, Nittele Plus - Sendai show, full broadcast

So how do we watch these?

Well, we can’t really watch the broadcasts as they happen, unless you live in Japan/get Japanese TV channels. Online streams are very hard to find, especially for regional TV stations. But it is pretty much a certainty that fans will upload videos from the broadcasts onto the internet.

Apr. 19: Gala 14:00

INFO

The World Team Trophy (WTT) is a team event composed of the top 6 ranked countries after the rest of the major competitions of the season are done. This year, the countries in order of qualification are: Russia, USA, Japan, Canada, France and China. Each country sends two men, two ladies, one pair and one dance team to the competition. Skaters earn points for their team based on their placement in their segment of the competition, and the country with the greatest number of points in the end wins. WTT has been held three times so far, in 2009, 2012, and 2013. (For more information regarding the qualification process and other rules, see the ISU website.)

WTT is generally regarded as an informal competition with a fun and relaxed atmosphere; skaters are encouraged to cheer for their team from the K&C and compete for a Team Spirit Award. However, scores recorded at WTT do count towards skaters’ personal/season’s bests, and there is a total of $1 million prize money at stake, distributed among all 6 teams.

HOW TO WATCH

ISU: The ISU stream will show the entire competition live, including the gala. This stream is blocked in Japan, S. Korea and USA since other parties have bought the broadcasting rights in those countries. You may need to use a VPN to unblock it. The stream should work everywhere else in the world.

Icenetwork: Icenetwork will stream the entire competition live for subscribers in the US. (I don’t recommend buying a subscription now, since the season is almost over and you would still have to pay the full price.)

TV Asahi: TV Asahi will air the singles competitions in slightly delayed broadcasts the day of the events, and the entire competition will be aired on TV Asahi ch.2 on May 2-3. I do not know of any reliable online streams at this time.

Youtube: If you can’t watch live, videos from the competition will be uploaded to Youtube and/or Dailymotion pretty quickly, so you can always catch up later.
